Job Description
The Application Engineer (AE) is responsible for managing the delivery of one or more processes, solutions, and/or projects with a focus on quality and effective risk management. The AE contributes to continuous process improvement, identifies innovative solutions through research and analysis, and applies best practices.
They are accountable for achieving their own targets which impact the immediate team. The AE will provide technical guidance to colleagues to ensure agreed outcomes are achieved.
Essential Functions of the Job
Design and Development: Designs, develops, delivers, and maintains solutions or infrastructure.
User Requirements: Understands user requirements as translated into user stories and ensures design and technical specifications meet those requirements both from business process and technical implementation perspectives.
Collaboration: Works closely with the Technical Product Manager to deliver a working solution within the EY landscape.
Cost Efficiency: Develops with software component reuse, consolidated platforms, environments, products with the goal of reducing overall IT costs in mind.
Technical Guidance: Provides technical guidance to colleagues to ensure agreed outcomes are achieved.
Performance Objectives: Meets performance objectives and metrics set locally (client service, quality and risk management, sales and business growth, solution development, and teaming etc.).
Development Estimates: Provides appropriate development estimates.
Feedback: Provides suggestions/feedback regarding application engineering methodologies, standards, and leading practices.
Technical Solutions: Researches and evaluates alternative technical solutions and proposes the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
Standards Adherence: Maintains adherence to architectural standards/principles, global product-specific guidelines, usability design standards, etc.
Transition Support: Provides support during the transition to production and works closely with Technical Product Manager, infrastructure, information security, and operations to implement/build solutions as part of end-to-end projects.
Analytical/Decision Making Responsibilities
- Problem Identification: Can identify and address less-to-more complex application engineering strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
- Project Issues: Anticipates project issues, defines the problem, identifies possible causes, and works with the team to identify solutions.
- Application Engineering: Applies judgment in implementing Application Engineering methodologies, processes, and practices to specific requirements of projects/programs.
- Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to work somewhat independently through complex solutions and infrastructure to troubleshoot and analyze issues.

Possesses qualities necessary to be part of a high-performing application engineering project team. - Communication:
Good interpersonal communication and organizational skills and can work side-by-side with non-technical business team product owners. - Technical Skills:

Knowledge of the organizational structure of the firm to facilitate work with groups outside of the immediate technical team. - IT Services:
Possesses an understanding of IT Services: service offerings, technical standards and policies, technical and business strategies, as well as organizational structure. - Emerging Technologies:

Advanced level technical skills in hardware installation and support, intermediate level technical skills in database engineering, infrastructure, network engineering, configuration management, IT environment and design management, technical architecture, and DevOps practices. - Soft Skills:
Intermediate level soft skills in relationship building, communicating with impact, critical thinking, driving outcomes, complex problem solving, and client trust and value.
Supervision Responsibilities
Technical Guidance: Provides technical guidance to colleagues to ensure agreed outcomes are achieved.
Skill Assessment: May be asked to assess the technical skills of the Application Engineering staff where appropriate.
Supervision and Support: Provides supervision and support to ensure quality, adherence to application engineering methodologies, standards, leading practices, budgets, and timelines are met with junior colleagues.
Role Model: Serves as a role model by promoting and demonstrating commitment to Application Engineering methodologies, processes, and standards for both EY and industry-wide, recommending process improvements when necessary.
Expertise: Lends expertise to internal IT teams and task forces as well as other IT projects/programs.
Other Requirements
- Work Hours: Overtime and vacation scheduling are dependent upon team priorities and may change during the course of a year.
- Communication: Must be able to communicate fluently in English, both written and verbal.
Education Requirements
- Degree: A degree in Computer Science or a related discipline or equivalent work experience.
Experience
- Years of Experience: 3-5+ years hands-on experience building, integrating, and delivering software solutions.
- Application Design: Experience in Application Design.
- Translation: Ability to translate business objectives into software solutions.
- Sourcing Options: Demonstrated experience in utilizing flexible sourcing options to deliver application engineering services.
- Vendor Management: Demonstrated experience in working with application vendors/external resource providers and managing key contacts to deliver value for money.
- Operational Support: Ability to step into operations issues to help resolve them.
